Orokonui Ecosanctuary offers visitors both guided tours and self-guided walking. Join one of our expert and friendly guides on a walking tour and you will experience the sights and sounds of the enchanting native New Zealand forest. All guided tour tickets include a complimentary self-guided walking permit allowing visitors to explore the Ecosanctuary further at the completion of the tour.
Tours are available for individuals and small groups as well as private tours for larger groups (10 people or more). Become a member today and receive discounted rates. Annual Passes are great value for frequent visitors.
Orokonui Highlights tour (1 hr) - On the Highlights tour you may see takahe, tuatara, Otago skinks, kaka, bellbirds and tui (seasonal and weather dependent), plus some iconic NZ trees. The tour finishes at a bird feeder among centuries old forest. From here you can choose to explore further or return to the Visitor Centre (15 mins).
For large groups the Highlights tour travels a circuit from the Visitor Centre and return, taking approx. 1.5hrs.
Forest Explorer (2 hrs) - The Forest Explorer is all of the Highlights tour plus an opportunity to encounter some of the South Island species of forest bird (brown creeper, yellow breasted tomtit, robin). The tour finishes at the eel pond, 5 mins from the VisitorCentre.
Large Groups/Corporate Groups/Team Building - We are happy to customise a tour to meet with your time constraints and interest requirements. We also offer daylight tours outside of opening hours.
Please contact reception for the full range of other mix and match options including a tour of the flax plantation (pa harakeke), making a small item with flax or a volunteer work component.
