Tours & Prices

Orokonui Ecosanctuary offers visitors both guided tours and self-guided walking. Join one of our friendly expert guides on a walking tour, and experience the sights and sounds of native New Zealand cloud forest. All guided tour tickets include a self-guided walking permit, allowing visitors to explore the Ecosanctuary further after their tour.

Daily tours are available for individuals and small groups. For larger groups (10 people or more) we offer private tours-just get in touch with Victoria at events@orokonui.nz

Orokonui Highlights tour (1 hr) - The highlights tour takes visitors through our grassland, regenerating forest, and the start of our ancient forest habitat. This cross section of habitats is commonly home to a range of native fauna including tuatara, Otago Skinks, korimako, tūī, and kākā. Guides will share their knowledge of Orokonui's history, its conservation stories, and discuss any taoka (treasured) native species you encounter along the way. The tour finishes at our viewing platform, amongst 600 year old podocarp/broadleaf forest. From here visitors are able to continue exploring the old forest for smaller bird species, or return to the Visitor Centre (~15 min walking).

For large groups the Highlights tour travels a circuit from the Visitor Centre and return, taking approx. 1.5hrs.

Forest Explorer (2 hrs) - Our Forest Explorer tour continues from the one hour tour, with guides leading visitors further into the old forest for a deeper understanding of Orokonui and its taoka species. Smaller manu/birds living in the old forest habitat include Kakaruwai/South Island robins, pipipi/brown creepers, tītipounamu/rifleman, piwakawaka/fantails, riroriro/grey warblers and miromiro/South Island tomtits. Notable rakau/trees seen on the two hour tour include totara, rimu, miro, poakaka, raukawa and impressive examples of ancient tarata/lemonwood and tī kouka/cabbage tree.

Large Groups/Corporate Groups/Team Building - We are happy to customise a tour to meet with your time constraints and interest requirements.  We also offer daylight tours outside of opening hours.

Please contact reception for the full range of other mix and match options including a tour of the flax plantation (pa harakeke), making a small item with flax or a volunteer work component.

Tour bookings are recommended to guarantee a guided tour. Bookings are confirmed when you receive a return email.
