Opened in 2010 the Pā Harakeke is a joint venture between Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki and Orokonui Ecosanctuary. The pā provides flax to weavers and emphasises the long cultural link which has existed between Maori and the natural environment. It contains over 100 flax varieties, including many prized cultivars that have been handed down through generations of Maori weavers.
Plants have been sourced from the Rene Orchiston Collection held at Lincoln and from the Dunedin Botanic Garden. Numbered plants are linked to those of the source collection for which weaving characteristics have been catalogued. Near the centre of the pā are examples of other native plants with specialist uses for weaving and related cultural purposes.
