Night tour: Explore Te Pō
Join Orokonui’s expert guides on a nocturnal journey through the forest! Discover the hidden treasures of the sanctuary, and learn how we understand and protect the unusual ecology of Te Pō, the night.
Night tours are seasonal and run for a limited time. Spaces are capped to 10 people per walk, ensuring the best experience for both human visitors and sensitive sanctuary residents!
Tours begin at dusk, and are led by torchlight. Visitors are welcome to bring their own torches, but some sections are under red light-only conditions.
Night walks include variable terrain, including steps, narrow sections of track, dirt, gravel, and areas with exposed tree roots or rocks. The night route includes sections of continued uphill walking over an elevation of 100m. A reasonable level of fitness is required to comfortably and safely join the tour.
For health and safety reasons, these tours are only suitable for visitors aged 12 years or older. For younger explorers check out the kids night walks below.
Kids night walks: Explore Te Pō with Tamariki
Join us under torch and moonlight to experience the magic of the nocturnal ngahere! Designed for whānau with tamariki aged 5–12, Kids’ Night Tours are a rare opportunity to explore Orokonui after dark.
Starting at dusk and guided by our expert team, this evening adventure offers curious young explorers and their whānau the chance to discover the hidden treasures of Te Pō, the night.

*NOTE: Kids’ Night tours are suitable for tamariki aged 5 and over. Warm clothing and a reasonable level of fitness are required to safely participate. Tamariki aged over 12 are welcome to join their younger whānau too! All children must be accompanied by an adult at a ratio no less then three children to one adult.
