Blueskin Road between Green Road and Orokonui will be closed entirely from the 28th of April to the 19th of June. Access to Orokonui Ecosanctuary during this period will only be via Port Chalmers.
This closure is so repairs can take place to a section of the road. To ensure it does not further degrade to create an unplanned closure.
Visitors travelling from Dunedin city should take state highway 88. Starting by Forsyth Barr stadium, travelling along the harbour front before going uphill at Port Chalmers. This route takes approx 25 mins from the city centre.
Visitors travelling from Waitati or North of the city should either head into town before taking SH88. Or can take Blueskin Road up from Waitati before continuing onto Mt Cargill Rd. They will then have to take Upper junction Road down to SH88 and then turn up the hill at Port Chalmers.
There is no doubt this closure will affect visitation to the sanctuary. We encourage visitors to make the effort to still visit the sanctuary as visitors contribute greatly to our work to help wildlife thrive.
Note this closure will not affect any of the events running at the sanctuary during this period including the New Zealand String Quartet on the 10th of May.
