At least 20 native birds reside within the Orokonui Ecosanctuary, including some of the rarest found in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Orokonui Ecosanctuary is home to six species of lizard, two species of frog and the iconic Tuatara.
Plants and Fungi
Around 193 native plants thrive within the Orokonui Ecosanctuary, protected from introduced browsing mammals such as deer, possums and goats.
Invertebrates
A wide variety of amazing invertebrates live throughout the sanctuary.
Fish
Twelve species of native fish reside in Orokonui Ecosanctuary’s streams, ponds and wetlands.
